A Secret in a Little Basket A Hebrew mother named Jochebed gave birth to a healthy, beautiful baby boy. But the wicked Pharaoh in Egypt had made a cruel rule that no baby boys could live. Jochebed hid her sweet baby for three whole months. When she could hide him no longer, she took a basket made of papyrus reeds, coated it with pitch so water could not get inside, placed the baby tenderly inside, and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile River. Miriam Watches from the Shore The baby's big sister, young Miriam, stood nearby watching carefully to see what would happen to her baby brother. The little basket bobbed gently in the warm water. Suddenly, the princess, Pharaoh's daughter, came down to the river to bathe! She spotted the basket among the tall reeds and sent her servant girl to fetch it. Safe in the Princess's Care When the princess opened the lid, she saw the little baby crying. Her heart was filled with pity: 'This is one of the Hebrew children!' Brave Miriam ran up and asked: 'Shall I go and call a Hebrew nurse to care for the baby for you?' The princess said: 'Go.' Miriam ran and fetched her own mother!
