Foundations of the Christian Life

Lesson 2: Knowing God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Meet the one true God who has made himself known as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

30 to 40 minutes for personal study; 50 to 65 minutes with a group Confess the biblical truth that God is one. Recognize the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as distinct and fully divine. See why the Trinity matters for worship, prayer, love, and mission. When Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, he brings them to the Father. When he promises not to leave them alone, he speaks of the Holy Spirit. When the church baptizes new disciples, it does so in the one name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Christians did not begin with an abstract puzzle and call it the Trinity. They began with the God of Israel, encountered Jesus as Lord, and received the Holy Spirit as God's living presence. The word *Trinity* came later as the church searched for faithful language that would protect everything Scripture revealed. The one true God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three distinct persons who share the one divine being and act together in creation, salvation, and renewal. Matthew 28:18-20 2 Corinthians 13:14 Ephesians 1:3-14 The Bible is uncompromising that there is one God. Christians do not worship three gods. Yet the New Testament speaks of the Father as God, calls the Son divine and worthy of worship, and presents the Spirit as God's personal presence who speaks, leads, gives life, and can be grieved. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. Nor are they three roles worn by one person at different moments. At Jesus' baptism, the Son stands in the water, the Spirit descends, and the Father speaks. The distinction is real, and so is the unity. The Trinity is a mystery, but mystery does not mean contradiction. Christians are not saying that God is one person and three persons in the same sense. We confess one divine being shared eternally by three persons. Our language cannot contain God, but it can guard us from saying less than Scripture says. This truth changes Christian life. We are brought to the Father through the Son and given life by the Spirit. Salvation is the work of the triune God. Prayer, worship, fellowship, and mission all arise from God's own overflowing love. Deuteronomy 6:4-9: The Lord Is One The confession called the Shema stands at the heart of Israel's faith. The Lord alone is God and deserves the love of the whole person. Christian teaching about the Trinity does not replace this confession. It explains how the one God has made himself known through the Son and the Spirit. Matthew 3:13-17: Father, Son, and Spirit Together At Jesus' baptism, the three are present at once. The Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven. This scene resists the idea that Father, Son, and Spirit are merely temporary masks worn by one divine person. John 1:1-18: The Word With God and God John distinguishes the Word from God and also declares that the Word was God. The eternal Word becomes flesh in Jesus and makes the unseen God known. Christian faith does not turn Jesus into a lesser heavenly being, nor does it confuse him with the Father. Matthew 28:18-20 and 2 Corinthians 13:14: The Trinity in Christian Life Jesus commands baptism in the singular name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Paul blesses the church with the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Spirit. Trinitarian faith belongs in discipleship, worship, community, and mission, not only in theological discussion. Trinity The Christian teaching that the one God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Person Language used to describe the real distinction of Father, Son, and Spirit without dividing God into three beings. Incarnation The eternal Son truly becoming human in Jesus without ceasing to be divine. Let prayer follow the biblical pattern of coming to the Father through the Son in the help and presence of the Spirit. Reject any picture that makes the Father unwilling to love while Jesus tries to persuade him. The Son reveals the Father's own saving love. Seek a Christian community where unity does not erase difference and difference does not destroy love. Pray through Ephesians 1:3-14. Mark what the Father purposes, what the Son accomplishes, and what the Spirit gives. Then thank the one God for the work described in the passage. Father, thank you for loving and receiving us through your Son. Lord Jesus, thank you for revealing the Father and giving yourself for us. Holy Spirit, make the life of Christ real in us and lead us into truth. Triune God, teach us to worship you with wonder. Amen. Which passages help you see both the unity and the distinction of Father, Son, and Spirit? Why are common analogies such as water, eggs, or clover often inadequate? How does the Trinity reshape the way we understand love and salvation? Keep the biblical passages in front of the group before introducing later theological vocabulary. Use analogies cautiously. It is better to admit their limits than to leave learners with a distorted picture of God. Invite wonder without suggesting that mystery excuses unclear or contradictory claims. Michael Reeves, Delighting in the Trinity. Fred Sanders, The Deep Things of God. What is the historic Christian doctrine of the Trinity? God is three separate gods who cooperate in council There is one God who eternally exists as three distinct co-equal persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit God is one person who takes off and puts on three different masks at different times Jesus was an ordinary human who became God after his baptism There is one God who eternally exists as three distinct co-equal persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Biblical monotheism reveals one true God existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). In what way is the Trinity revealed at the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:16-17)? Only the Son is present while the Father and Spirit remain unknown The Son is baptized in water, the Spirit descends as a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven in loving affirmation Jesus baptizes the Father and the Spirit in the Jordan River The event was a private vision seen only by John the Baptist The Son is baptized in water, the Spirit descends as a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven in loving affirmation All three divine persons are visibly and audibly present simultaneously, demonstrating distinct personhood within divine unity. How does the doctrine of the Trinity illuminate the statement that 'God is love' (1 John 4:8)? God was lonely before creating angels and human beings From all eternity, before creation existed, there was perfect relational love and communion between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Love is a recent emotional discovery of the New Testament God needs human worship to sustain his divine self esteem From all eternity, before creation existed, there was perfect relational love and communion between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Because God is triune, eternal love is intrinsic to God's nature, not an attribute dependent upon created beings. How does the Apostolic Benediction in 2 Corinthians 13:14 express the triune life in the church? It ignores the Holy Spirit and focuses only on human fellowship It invokes the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit It commands believers to separate into three different denominations It promises worldly political triumph to the church It invokes the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit Paul grounds the relational peace and unity of the Christian community in the grace of Christ, the Father's love, and the Spirit's communion. Theological Essay on Trinitarian Theology and Christian Worship Write 700 to 900 words exploring the biblical doctrine of the Trinity. Analyze biblical evidence from the baptism of Jesus, Paul's apostolic blessings, and examine why Trinitarian orthodoxy is essential for Christian prayer, worship, and community. Examine the simultaneous revelation of the Father, Son, and Spirit in the baptism of [Jesus](/bible/explorer/person/jesus) at the [Jordan River](/bible/explorer/place/jordan-river). Analyze [Paul](/bible/explorer/person/paul)'s benediction in 2 Corinthians 13:14 and the baptismal formula in Matthew 28:19. Refute modalism and tritheism, affirming biblical monotheism and distinct divine persons. Articulate how praying to the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit shapes Christian worship. The essay must be 700 to 900 words, cite biblical references accurately, engage the designated Bible Explorer links, and adhere to pastoral clarity without prohibited compound hyphens. The distinction between the immanent Trinity (God in eternal self existence) and the economic Trinity (God in redemptive history). The defense of monotheistic orthodoxy against ancient modalism (Sabellianism) and subordinationism (Arianism). The singular into the name (eis to onoma) in Matthew 28:19 followed by three persons underscores divine unity. Gregory of Nazianzus articulated the classical formula: No sooner do I conceive of the One than I am illumined by the splendour of the Three. Bavinck, Herman. The Doctrine of God.
