While the aged priest Zechariah was serving in his division’s order inside the Holy Place of the Temple in Jerusalem, the angel Gabriel appeared beside the altar of incense, announcing that his barren wife Elizabeth would bear a son to be named John, who would turn many of Israel to God in the spirit and power of Elijah.
