The Angel of the LORD ascends from Gilgal to Bochim and confronts Israel for entering into leagues with the Canaanite inhabitants and failing to break down their altars; the angel warns that their enemies will become thorns in their sides and their gods a snare; the congregation lifts up their voices, weeps bitterly, names the place Bochim ("weepers"), and sacrifices there to the LORD.
